Suzanne & Aengus

“Two years after our marriage and we are still raving about Dane to all our friends, new and old. Our photos are like movie stills.”

Chinatown Wedding

In their vows, Aengus promised to tell Suzanne three things he loves about her every day, a ritual they started when they went to bed one night and Suzanne was upset and it did such an excellent job of cheering her up he decided to do it every day since. They also go on the same winding 9 km walk every weekend to connect and decompress and be present together.

I say this to illustrate that I was struck by how incredibly intentional both of them are. How incredibly they SEE one another. How they communicate and support and lift up and inspire and actively make the choice to celebrate the hell out of one another each and every day. It was inspiring, and the first wedding at which I’ve shed a tear during the ceremony in a very long time - because of how wonderfully put and thoughtful their vows were and how it made me reflect on something I’ve recently found, but that is a story for another time.

So much of yesterday felt wildly serendipitous. We stopped at the Opera House and the steps were deserted bar one man playing a harmonica. We stopped at a tree under which they had one of their first dates and where, seven years later, Aengus proposed, and 50 m away in a rotunda a man was playing classical music on a cello, whom after I asked graciously allowed them to have a dance together in this tiny little structure with him serenading them.

And so what could be more romantic and honest and reflective of your daily life, of the rituals that have built and sustained your identity together than officially joining one another at a place you walk together every weekend, with only those you care most about in attendance. And what better way to finish off the day with fresh baked egg tarts from your favourite Chinese bakery and some piping hot noodles and milkshakes from your go-to cheap and cheerful Chinatown haunt.
